2.1 Preparations for the introduction of the program

Index

Before the PAR team can install the PAR system, the following must be considered.

Determining the possible need for several simultaneous users (employees of the investigative youth work or workshop and supervisors)

If there are several users, a secure location for the PAR system must be found on a common network drive to which all users have access. Cloud services such as Onedrive or Google Drive do not work, because the data transfer to the services is not immediate.
If there is only one user, he is also the main user. In this situation, the PAR system can be installed on the user's own workstation in a password-protected environment. We recommend using computer hard drive encryption such as Bitlocker.

SQL connection and database

As of version 6.6.0, PAR supports some SQL connections for data processing in addition to Excel databases. We recommend the use of SQL server in larger organizations with at least 10 simultaneous users or if there are problems with sharing an Excel database. The PAR and SQL instructions can be found at this link .

Determining the location of instructions

The location should be determined in a place where the accompanying material related to statistics such as instructions, forms and other material related to statistics can be placed. The location can be the same as the location of the PAR program - or some other common secure network drive space to which all PAR users have access.

PAR System Software Requirements

  • Every PAR user must have Microsoft Excel 2010 or later installed on their workstation. The online version of Excel or alternative Excel programs such as Libreoffice do not work.

  • A Windows computer that meets the operating system and hardware requirements for Excel 2010 or later. The PAR system does not work with the Office for Mac package for the time being.

  • Sufficient access rights for all PAR users on the network station: To function correctly, PAR needs read and write rights to the folders User Interface, Database, Attachments and Statistics.

  • When using the recommended PAR login.vbs file, the execution of VBScript files must be allowed.

ICT administration consent and participation

In the majority of organizations, the ICT administration is responsible for the information security of the workstations, and they should know about all the installed programs, where the PAR system fits. In particular, they are interested in the TeamViewer remote desktop connection required for installation, which may be treated as a security risk to some degree when a person outside the organization gains control of the machine remotely.

The PAR system contains sensitive customer data and it is good that, in order to protect this information, people from the ICT administration are involved in determining the location and encryption according to the organization's tools.

For these reasons, among others, it is good to always contact the ICT administration before implementing the PAR system.
